Blood test is considered important factor in determining if a person is suffering from poikilocytosis. Blood test is an essential component of the initial evaluation of all patients with hematologic disorders. Examining blood films stained with Wright’s stain provides evident clue in the diagnosis of anemia and other disorders in blood such as leukocytes and platelets. When the number of abnormally shaped red blood cells increases in the blood film, poikilocytosis can be determined in a persons blood.

Blood Tests and Poikilocytosis

A number of blood tests are done to identify the disease. Tests are used to evaluate type and quantity of blood cells present and other factors related to blood. Blood count is done to determine number of different blood cell present in the circulation. Lesser number of blood cells of red or white is distinguished as anemia or leukopenia respectively.

Poikilocytosis causes

Poikilocytosis occurs due to deficiency of vitamin B12 or folic acid in blood. An early symptoms similar to anemia can also be an indication to poikilocytosis. Other abnormalities like low count of white blood cells and platelets, presence of burr cells found in blood tests would require a quick checkup by a hematologist, who may conduct further tests to know blood vitamin levels and possible bone marrow testing.

While blood tests are important in finding problem with blood cells, an early detection and regular chek up can cure the disease.

Differential Blood Count
DBC is used to determine the total proportion of blood cells types found in the bloodstream. The percentage of immature leukemic cells counted and then different types of disease related to blood cells are determined. Patients diagnosed with abnormal sized RBC are then sent for some more tests.
Hemoglobin level test
The test is conducted to find and measure the level of oxygen carrying pigment in the erythrocytes.
Blood coagulation
Blood tests involves checking variables if there is problem with clotting.
Blood Morphology and Staining
The test is used to find the abnormalities in cell shape, their structure and the condition of the cell nucleus. Blood platelets may show giant forms that are deficient in granules.
Blood Chemistry
The test is done to determine the type and amount of enzymes, minerals and other substances found in the blood. Typical tests include measuring serum vitamin B12, measuring serum levels of calcium, potassium, phosphate, and uric acid. The test is also very important for finding any damages caused to kidney and liver.
